In 2003, the Oscar for "Best Animated Feature" was given to the Studio Ghibli anime "Spirited Away".
However, the legendary director Hayao Miyazaki wasn't at the Academy Awards to except the Oscar.
Why you must ask?
After being told to keep quiet for a few years, Miyazaki finally broke his silence in 2009.
It was a form of protest against America's involvement in the Iraq War.

I went to a Studio Ghibli fan panel one time at an anime con and learned that Miyazaki is a pacifist in real life.
What are your thought about this event that took place at the 2003 Academy Awards?

Im glad he did it if he felt that way about the war. Miyazaki has always been one with strong views and always like to show it(including iin his films)

I kinda figured this was the case, as Hollywood, for a while, was big on the whole "ERMAGERD! AMERICA IS BEING A BIG BULLY BY INVADING IRAQ, LET US PROTEST!"
