Pity, he seems like a nice guy.
Now someone will point out that he rapes his dog or something I haven't heard of.

Over the last 3 days, I saw PACIFIC RIM, Man o Steel, and just 2 hours ago, The Great Gatsby. 1: Holy Shit -smiles wide-, 2: Agh! -Covers bleeding ears-, 3: Why!? -smile disappears-.

I don't dislike him, exactly, but whenever I see or hear his name all I think of is this:
boy the reactions to ELYSIUM have not been kind. Too bad; I really loved the director's last movie (District9). I guess I'll wait and rent this.

Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) 8/10
Much better than I thought. I wasn't very scared, but I was engaged and entertained.

OBLIVION - basically effects porn but still pretty fun. 7.5/10
MUD - kind of overhyped I thought. The story was a jumble of bad country songs. Some really good acting though. 6/10

I heard they thought about making a sequel, but when they heard it was going to be stupid and involve aliens they decided not to.

PACIFIC RIM - it was a blast! But of course they had to run it on the smallest, crappiest screen in town. 8.5/10

Star Trek Into Darkness 9/10
SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What I liked-
Kirk Listening to Beastie Boys. People bitched about this in the last movie. So what do they do? They do it again, and show that Kirk is clearly a fan of the classical music of the late 20th century.
All the characters had something to do. Sulu was badass. Chekov saved the day. Spock dealed with being half human. Kirk proved his dedication to his crew. Bones was pure awesome. I could go on and on.
The moment near the end with Spock and Kirk. I teared up. It was well done, and a great moment.
What I did not like-
The Klingons. I just wish we had seen a little more of them. And why does Admiral Marcus want to go to war so bad?
Final thought-
How awesome would it be if one of the Klingons on Kronos was General Chang?

It's been a while now since I went to see it, but I got the impression that Marcus just had a "pre-emptive strike as a front for ethnic cleansing" attitude about it. Not the greatest quality in a Starfleet officer but I suppose Lindelof was being "topical."
I too hope for more Klingon action in the next movie. And I agree Bones is awesome

THE GUILT TRIP - a whiny chemist (Seth Rogen) is driving around the country trying to sell the eco-friendly cleaner he invented. He picks up his stereotype Jewish Mama (Barbra Streisand) and brings her along in the hopes of reuniting her with an old boyfriend, so, presumably, she'll be in his hair less. It wasn't offensively bad, just really really dull. 2/10
HIT & RUN - Charlie is a dolt in the witness protection program. When his girlfriend gets a job offer in another city he decides to leave his safehouse and drive her there. They're immediately dogged by a moron US Marshal, her douchey ex and the guy who he testified against. Dax Shepard wrote & produced this for himself and his real-life sweetie Kristen Bell to star in, largely for the purpose of saying "Haha world, I'm boning Kristen Bell! Nyaahhh!" Provides a couple chuckles but mostly it's just kind of obnoxious. 2/10
STAND UP GUYS - Three retired hoods (Christopher Walken, Al Pacino and Alan Arkin) get together for a last night of trouble-getting-into. Based on the premise it really ought to be more fun than it is. Although, from the reviews it got, I was expecting worse. 5/10

Barry Lyndon (1975) 10/10, no problem.
Kubrick has always been a hit-and-miss on my opinions, as I loved Strangelove and Clockwork Orange, though I hated Full Metal Jacket and Eyes Wide Shut. This is definitely one of his betters, scratch that, my favorite of his films. Even though the second part of the film really changed a lot from the first part, like his asshole kids and stuff, it still makes an incredible movie. And it also reminded me why an Epic is referred to as such a name: epic.

Baz Lurhman's GATSBY. It was pretty terrible.
EVIL DEAD (remake) - This just might be the goriest movie I've ever seen. It's a pretty straightforward remake, a lot of little homages to the original in there (did anyone else sit all the way through the credits for the stinger?)

It's not Oliver Stone's best work, but it's still a good biopic with a great soundtrack.

Loved that flick when I was a teenager. Cant stand the Doors now.
World War Z 6/10.
I can't wait to see a uncut version of this flick. As it stands it's a zombie flick with no teeth.

Saw Gone with the Wind on the Big screen with mi madre. Still good after all these years. Clark Gable is one handsome son-of-a-gun.

And he only got the role b/c Gary Cooper flat-out refused to take it. Funny how things work out
TRANCE - wild heist/revenge/love triangle/mystery/psychological thriller from director Danny Boyle. Some really good performances from James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson & Vincent Cassel. I liked it better than SUNSHINE but not as much as 28 DAYS LATER. 8/10

I saw "The Frozen Ground" after seeing the Film Brain review. I thought it was pretty cool and glad to hear Brad liked it too. A little slow in parts...

THIS IS 40 - Pete (Paul Rudd) is a self-absorbed, petulant manchild. His wife Amy (Leslie Mann) is a neurotic joyless scold. Their marriage is in a severe stalemate, they both have serious daddy issues and are turning their own children into basket cases, they treat each other and everyone around them with contempt and outright hostility - did I mention this is a comedy? Yeah, it's godawful. How can (writer/director) Judd Apatow really expect us to care whether these two loathsome people stay together? -20/10
IDENTITY THIEF - highly improbably road trip movie about a mild-mannered accountant (Jason Bateman) who personally tracks down the woman who stole his identity (Melissa McCarthy) and takes her to his home state so he can press charges against her. It was mostly meh, and they pulled the "Haha she's fat and horny" gag way too often, but Bateman and McCarthy work pretty well together. 4/10

ROBOT & FRANK - The near future. Frank (Frank Langella) is an "officially" retired cat burgler who is beginning to suffer from senility. His son gets him a robot as a sort of home care aide. Frank bristles at this, until he discovers Robot's subservience and apparent lack of an emotional or moral center makes it an ideal accomplice. This was a unique story and surprisingly bittersweet. Co-stars James Marsden, Liv Tyler, Jeremy Sisto, Susan Sarandon, with Peter Sarsgaard as the voice of Robot. 8/10
THE ABC'S OF DEATH - In a word, Disappointing. I usually love horror anthologies, but this was pretty much one big mess. The premise is 26 different filmmakers each submit a short depicting at least one onscreen death, each death starting with a different letter of the alphabet. There's no other connecting idea and no collaboration (which is why it has 3 different segments involving toilets.) Out of 26, I kind of liked 5 ("Dogfight" "Ingrown" "Nuptials" "Pressure" and "XXL"); the rest were an even mix of really mundane and blazingly stupid & garish. 1/10
