Also the previous night I finally got round to watching the fairly recent Hammer Horror movie "The Woman in Black" with Daniel Radcliffe. This one I really enjoyed. It was just a straight forward classic Gothic horror with lashings of atmosphere. Nothing particularly original, but these kinds of genuinely spooky movies seem few and far between these days and it's a shame because I just love them. In fact if anyone can recommend me any movies in that vein please do. Anything along the lines of Insidious, The Conjuring, Ghost Story, The Sixth Sense, The Changeling etc.

I was pleasantly surprised by that one too. It used the setpieces really well and Radcliffe & Ciaran Hinds are both actors I love to watch.

I loved how the house looked genuinely decrepit and dilapidated. Too often these sort of films use an actual manor house as a set without doing much in the way of alteration and it ends up looking so pristine that it feels like a gaggle of kids on a school trip are just waiting around the corner. In this movie the sense of isolation and decay felt genuinely creepy and intense.

The Woodsman- I heard of this film through recommendation and whatnot. Well made, good performances. I don't have any complaints or anything I really want to say about it.

The Taste Of Tea - I really find this film entertaining. It's a nice silly Japanese film that doesn't make logical sense but then again, that's not what I want out of it. Good stuff.

I very seldom hear that movie get mentioned but I remember really enjoying it. Kevin Bacon was a great as always and it pulled off the understated, unsettling ambience that I've seen similar movies go for often with less successful results.

Winter's Tale was meh. It would have been awesome if the sound wasn't broken in my theater and I had a friend or two with me. 3/5
The Wind Rises was a suitably climax to Miyazaki's animation career; a conclusion that brings together his love of flight, his simplistic fantasies, and his fluid anime style. Good flick. 4.4/5
Labor Day: This was a slight disappointment. I thought this flick was incredibly slow-paced for the first half and over-the-top intense from the moment Josh Brolin appears. I felt it moved too slow and glanced over character choices "because Love!" I haven't seen any other Reitman flicks, but I understand that at least from a critical standpoint this is one of his lesser works. Good performances in a rather blah story that simply was not thought through. 2.8/5

Slither is a great film. I have a fan edit I got online where it is really is a cut that a fan made where it put all the deleted scenes back into it. I think the film is even better actually with those scenes in it.

Friday night I watched Nebraska, and I liked it, it was a good movie, but not a great film. would I watch it again or hell even buy it? hell no. once is enough but i'm glad I watched it. Bruce Dern is a favorite of mine. my favorite role of his will always be "The Burbs'

and "Dallas Buyers club' the next day that one I fucking loved. I would watch it again, but I dunno if i'd buy that one either.

I haven't seen Nebraska yet and probably won't for a while, but it's always great to hear some love for Bruce Dern. He is fantastic in "The Burbs" and "Silent Running" is another one of his that I adore, it's quite slow and understated, but just an awesome Sci-fi movie in my opinion.

You were writing about "Nebraska" and "Dallas Buyers Club" in the last few posts. Damn, I wanna see these movies so bad! However, that was and is difficult when you wait for your local cinema showing it someday but won't and then you're running out of time. Sure, I should have done this in the next big city to watch it there. Damn, but if I don't get a chance anymore at least I'll remember watching the DVDs as soon as they're out.

Speaking of cinema: An hour ago I went home from watching "Philomena".

It's a good-not-great movie. It has scenes with dry humour and scenes that gave me a teary eye, it has rough scenes and it is sometimes quite suspenseful (if you wanna call it that here). The soundtrack is nice, the story is interesting and both main actors, Steve Coogan and Judi Dench, do a great job. I think they're the best thing of the movie. I also like the actress playing the teenage Judi Dench character.
What I don't like about it is the kitsch and cliches put in the story. About cliches: It's good to see that the movie's not demonizing Christianity in general but more the evil nuns (not nuns in general), however, the few press people we get to see appear too stereotyped like they're no actual people.

Still, I don't regret spending my money on this ticket, I enjoyed the movie even though it could be better. But I think that the Oscar nominations were worth it.

Oh and I'm so glad that I have made much better experiences with nuns in my own past.

The last movie I saw before "Philomena" was btw. "BraveStarr - The Legend" (the feature movie).
How good/bad is it? Immediately after watching I wrote an email to Doug Walker. Would do a fun review! Not really a good movie or animated feature but unintentionally hillarious in many scenes.

What Was The Last Movie You Watched? - Page 32 Empty
PostSubject: Re: What Was The Last Movie You Watched?   What Was The Last Movie You Watched? - Page 32 EmptyFri Mar 14, 2014 2:58 am

Last night I watched Hamburger Hill.

I've had a morbid fascination with the Vietnam War for a while now and I'd seen what's probably considered the essential tetralogy of movies on the topic: Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, The Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now. I liked all of those to varying degrees but I never got around to watching Hamburger Hill until now, sort of dismissing it, maybe on the stupid basis that it's not as well known as the others. But finally I watched it and it was actually pretty good. I've seen a lot of complaints that it has a weak narrative, but personally I get annoyed when war movies have contrived narratives and cartoonish depictions of heroes and villains. This film didn't have that at all and I think that worked in its favour. It struck a good balance of depicting the minutiae and mundanities of an American Soldier in Vietnam and the truly horrific brutality of war. It's an ensemble piece; there's not really a main character to speak of and as you watch the movie you really have no idea who could take a bullet next. Also this broader approach means that the character studies feel a little less theatrical than you might expect, lending a natural sheen to the sense of camaraderie as well as to the portrayals of inter-unit tension. The whole thing was particularly successful at compelling me to put myself in the shoes of these desperate, frightened young men and had me constantly feeling thankful that I've never had to serve in a war like this. I think that's exactly how this sort of War movie should make the audience feel. It's pretty gory stuff too!

Then today I watched The New York Ripper.

I like to call myself a fan of Lucio Fulci but truth be told I've really not seen that much of his filmography. Don't Torture a Duckling, Zombie Flesh Eaters, The Beyond, House by the Cemetery and City of the Living Dead being the only films of his I've seen all the way through but New York Ripper has been on my list for a long time and I finally got around to it and honestly I think I can say that it's already in the running for my favourite Fulci movie, tied with The Beyond. This sleaze-fest was just awesome; everything you want from an 80's serial killer movie set in the big apple: Scuzzy porno theatres, run down cityscapes, cynical detectives, uncomfortable sexual encounters and genuinely stomach-turning gore. I even loved the killers weird duck-voice shtick, it was just the right side of strange to be creepy rather than funny.

This also struck me as one of the best written of the Fulci films I've seen; it's well paced, the dialogue is pretty good and although I guessed who the killer would turn out to be, the various red herrings had me doubting myself and the revelation of his motives was somewhat unexpected. I'd highly recommend this to anyone who likes the kind of movie that makes you want to take a shower after watching it.

Today I went to see "Grand Budapest Hotel". And my gawd, a lot of scenes made me feel and think like "What the f... am I looking at now?" and that's not even a complaint! It was the joy of the movie: Not only eye candy but also joyfully confusing and full of details you have to pay attention to. The actors were also all fine, as I said there's a lot to see and I also enjoyed the soundtrack.

The day before that I was watching "Camp 14 - Total Control Zone" for the first time. It's the documentary about the only born-in-camp prisoner who made it out of the North Korean concentration camp 14 (or any North Korean concentration camp). It contains information about his life then and now but also interviews with two ex-guards of such camps.
I wouldn't say it's bad or not well made but I can only recommend reading the book that is also based on this tragic story. It may not contain animations but way more information about the prisoner's fate and North Korean camps in general.

Hot tub time machine

So I guess the moral of the story is, if your life sucks, just use a time machine to change the past and make it awesome?  Laughing

But seriously though, it's a great movie and funny as hell.

i've seen Silent Running i thought he was good in it. but i thought it was a terrible and boring film. but to each their own. i've seen hot tub machine that was a good one. and had a WTF ending to it as well.

i believe they are working on a sequel to that too. but i don't think it has John Cusak in it either. sorry for my bad spelling. don't feel bad about films not coming near you. Veronica Mars isn't near me either. yes it is by where my brother lives but that's a long drive.

Yeah, I can understand people thinking it's boring. For a Sci-Fi movie there's really not much happening in it but I actually really enjoy the slow pace, I find it weirdly therapeutic.

The Thing (2011) - I heard about this movie way back when it was announced and I was extremely excited. Although, I had my doubts. It turns out that it was no were near as good as the original film. They had more than enough time to prepare for this and it kinda makes me sad that it didn't live up to the original. The CGI wasn't needed, bits of the stuff shown in the extras aren't even in the film and they're what drew me in even after all the negativity I heard about it. Not to mention the big plot inconsistancy with the spaceship.

It was a let down. I did judge the movie as a standalone film and to be honest I wouldn't mind seeing it again. It's a meh film.

Just recently watched All Hallows Eve, a low budget anthology horror movie that came out last year. I went into this with pretty dire expectations. I love the horror anthologies of the 80's but since then they just seem to have gotten worse to the point that I didn't even bother giving those V/H/S movies a shot. This one stood out though, simply on the strength of its trailer and I have to say it really wasn't anywhere near as bad as i was expecting. In fact I think it did a pretty good job of capturing the creepy-yet-fun feel of the anthologies of my preferred decade. It's far from perfect, the second story being a notable low-point, but it definitely deserves credit for some fantastic FX and costume work (not a spot of CGI) and for creating some genuinely chilling and gruesome moments while never descending into torture porn levels of nihilism. I'm totally afraid of clowns and there's a character here who loosely links all the stories together and he's got to be one of the creepiest clown characters I've seen in a movie for a long time. I'd recommend this if you're a fan of horror anthologies but feel disillusioned with the modern fare.

Rrrrgh. I desperately want a copy of that, but, as I don't own a Blu-Ray player, I don't see the point in spending so much for the Blu-Ray/DVD combo...I don't know why they didn't do a DVD-only release.

As one of my all-time favorite movies, I've seen so many different edits of 'IaMMMMW'; this new 197-minute reconstructed version on the Blu-Ray is pretty much the Holy Grail of edits, and the special features are quite nice, too.

Ooh, I'm envious  Laughing I love Wes Anderson movies; I really hope this gets an extended release & I can see it in the theater.

Over the weekend watched:
LA CONFIDENTIAL (re-watch) - adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel about corruption, blackmail and murder in 1950s Hollywood. I could probably watch this once a week for the rest of my life, I love it so much. Fantastic cast (possibly Russell Crowe's best performance) and beautifully paced and shot. 10/10

JONAH HEX - it's not the worst superhero movie I've ever seen (maybe not even bottom 10) but it is a pretty serious waste of a talented cast. And feels surprisingly generic for a movie written by Neveldine & Taylor. 4/10

WHITE HOUSE DOWN - so, take DIE HARD, subtract the humor, suspense, engaging characters and charismatic actors, add a half-baked political agenda and weirdly cheap-looking (we're talking syfy channel cheap-looking) visuals, and presto. This movie fails so completely that it's almost impressive. Almost. 0/10

GOODFELLAS (re-watch) - Poor Tommy. 9/10

PostSubject: RE: What Was The Last Movie You Watched?   What Was The Last Movie You Watched? - Page 32 EmptyTue Mar 25, 2014 1:12 am

3 Days to Kill- Was sorta disappointed in this, seeing as I only saw it on how much Brad loved it. Bloated story, with no loose ends, but plenty of meh moments that didn't entertain me as thoroughly as expected. Costner does fine, Amber Heard was the highlight and I feel should have been the main. Mostly I blame the direction for its rather bland execution. McG has never been a fave of mine. Not bad, but not really good either. 2.9/5

Godzilla Raids again- If you treasure your love of monster movies, avoid the dub. The tacked-on narration is insultingly bad, exponentially more than Blade Runner's infamous internal monologue. Overall, the movie just felt like a typical sequel. Godzilla looks a bit meaner, and his fight with Anguirus is satisfying to watch, albeit in fast motion. The third act is really disappointing as the movie seems to grind to a halt after the big battle. Definitely a couple steps down from the original. 2.7/5

Waking Sleeping Beauty- I went into this one expecting an enlightening behind-the-scenes of the Disney Renaissance, and I partly got that. Don Hahn takes risks making this documentary talking-head-free, but the structure is really just a collection of anecdotes, like most other documentaries, but it didn't feel as fresh as others. In the featurettes, Hahn states that he was really the best one to tell this story and he's probably right. However, that doesn't make him Morgan Spurlock or Errol Morris. That's not to say the story isn't interesting, I only feel they needed a skilled documentarian at the helm or at least a really talented editor. There are several moments that make it memorable, simply for knowledge sake, like Howard Ashman's seminar on the animated musical, which is the best thing on the DvD, and the caricature work is a lot of fun throughout. I expected a super documentary and ended up with a standard one that had a couple good moments, but no effective arc. 3.3/5

my dad was telling me the other day that he watched White House down. he liked it it was on tv so he didn't have to pay for it. I've seen Jonah Hex i saw that in the theatre. i agree 100% it wasn't that great of a film. it wasn't
like you said a terrible film but it wasn't that great either. my favorite part of it is Jeffery Dean Morgan's scenes he's a badass motherfucker. if only he would turn into an A list actor!

Oh I know! I really thought he was going to get huge after WATCHMEN, but it hasn't happened so far...
That was the weird thing about that movie; I'm seeing Morgan, Malcovich, Josh Brolin, Michael Shannon, Michael Fassbender, Aidan Quinn, that skinny guy from THE WIRE; and I'm thinking "I love all these guys, why am I not enjoying this more?"

Yeah, I saw WHITE HOUSE DOWN on the tv too. If I'd had to pay for it I would've been pissed.

What Was The Last Movie You Watched? - Page 32 Empty
PostSubject: Re: What Was The Last Movie You Watched?   What Was The Last Movie You Watched? - Page 32 EmptyWed Mar 26, 2014 5:16 am

I've been trying real hard to find good, genuinely spooky ghost movies to watch recently so I checked out The Awakening (2011) after hearing it compared to The Woman in Black which I really enjoyed. Unfortunately The Awakening didn't really live up to that comparison. It certainly started off promisingly enough with a period setting, restrained pacing and some genuinely creepy moments, in fact it harkens back to the ghost movie classics so much that it pays direct homage to a very notable scene from the 1980 movie The changeling. Sadly, that first half of the film feels like a prisoners memory of freedom once the "twist" is revealed. Don't get me wrong I'm a massive fan of a good twist, but it has to be done well. In this movie it isn't. This felt like the kind of twist I'd have written into a movie script when I was 13 years old and had just seen The Sixth Sense for the first time. There's just nothing in the first half of the movie that supports this weird revelation, no clever misdirection is used to divert your attention away from what should be something you could technically figure out earlier than when it hits. Instead it's just pulled out of nowhere. After a good twist, hell even a mediocre one, you should be able to go back, watch the movie again and spot all of the signifiers and potential clues that you missed on the first viewing instead this twist made me just want to not watch the rest of the film because it was so hackneyed and random. Dammit, now I'm ranting, but it truly saddens me when a movie with such potential and such atmosphere just fucks itself over with a really cheap, stupid third act.

Anyone please feel free to recommend me any good ghost movies I might not have seen. I'm starting to lose hope.

God Bless America - This film was extremely fun to watch. Really spoke to my inner desire to murder annoying stupid people. Although, it was a bit heavy on the social justice, but, whatever.

Frozen - Eh, just another cookie cutter Disney princess movie that they couldn't be arsed to actually animate with hard-drawn, hand-painted material. It takes no risks.

Black Hand (1950) - I really liked this film, even though its low budget does show through at point, it's quite engaging and nice. Even if it is very predictable.
