Living in the Midwest Really Sucks Sometimes... Empty
PostSubject: Living in the Midwest Really Sucks Sometimes...   Living in the Midwest Really Sucks Sometimes... EmptyMon Oct 07, 2013 10:16 pm

Here's how I spent my weekend - trapped in my apartment looking at this:

Living in the Midwest Really Sucks Sometimes... 1381864_3508937859670_1643249741_n

Six hours of rain, turning into snow with 70 mph windgusts. And I was lucky; I only lost power for Friday afternoon and my car wasn't under a tree. Some of my friends across town lost power all weekend. The interstate was closed Saturday and yesterday, and tragically a lot of cattle have been killed (we're a mostly rural state, agriculture is a major industry.) Not a good way to start out the month.

The good news is that it immediately warmed up after the storm ended, so it's melting/clearing quickly, but there's still people in the outlying areas without power, and cleanup is just kind of unbelievable -- I've never seen so many downed trees in my life.

Storm Atlas, recovery phase:

Bear in mind, this is one of three branch debris drop-offs in my town.  And it's hard to estimate, but probably about half of what got knocked down has been hauled to these spots by this point.
What they plan to do with all those wood chips, I have no earthly clue.

Do you have any idea how far my closet is from my bed? I have tile floors. IT WAS FREEZING.

Fortunately, I have a feline-based heater sleeping next to me. But ChaosTheory, that looks bad. We had that kind of storm a few years ago - the kind that flattens every forest it reaches - and there were quite a few suicides among the people who owned forest. Ruined in a night... So I hope you are well, your family is well, and I recommend a feline-based heater.

I do have a feline-based heater lol. I'm sorry to hear that about those forest owners. There's definitely a lot of people here whose livelihoods have been completely fucked up, though there was no human loss of life in the storm itself.

I'm going to be moving back to Kansas for Christmas, It's going to be freezing compared to the desert. Hopefully I can keep warm by burning herbs Wink
