The Cinema Snob Movie: TV Edit Empty
PostSubject: The Cinema Snob Movie: TV Edit   The Cinema Snob Movie: TV Edit EmptyThu Mar 14, 2013 1:57 pm

I just had a really random idea: If brad ever decided that down the line, he wanted to put the Snob movie online in some form, an interesting way to do it would be to make a "TV edit" version.

  • Cut out the nudity. The trick would be doing it in a way that doesn't involve black boxes, since most older TV edit's usually cut scenes or used alternate takes to hide nudity. Technically this would be the only thing he'd HAVE to do for Blip, but why stop there?
  • Re-dub all lines that include profanity. That unnatural over-use of "freaken'" really gives it a sanitized R-rated movie feel. Bonus points for a few really creative, "Monkey-fighting snakes" type redubs, or for getting someone else to very obviously dub another actor's lines.
  • Tack on a classic "Fox night at the movies" type intro at the beginning. Something like this, or this. Although that might be a bit too mainstream for the movie's exploitation feel. Maybe something more "Late night movie" like this would be better.
  • A few awkwardly placed fade-to-commercials that lead into ad rolls (does Blip let you do more than 1?) It's a full length movie, so I think Brad is entitled to have a few extra ads and earn a little bit more off it. Can include "The Cinema Snob Movie will return after these messages" cards as well.

If you really want to go all out:

  • Create framing segments in the style of one of those old late-night cable shows like Monstervision or Up all night. Maybe Josh Hadley could host it?
  • Pan and Scan the whole thing, or at least just crop it to 4:3.
  • Output the whole thing to VHS and then re-digitize it? That might hurt the quality a bit too much, though.

For fans who've already seen the movie, it'd create a whole new way to watch it again. And for people that haven't, it'd let them check the movie out while still offering incentive to buy the DVD to get the uncut version.

What do you guys think?

and interesting idea but Brad doesn't seem the type of guy to do this. he prefers shit uncut like i do for example.

i of course may be wrong on this and if i am than i am. that's just what my gut tells me anyways. sorry brad if i'm answering for ya. if i am.

i didn't think ya would man i just didn't want it to sound like i was answering for you that's all. off topic a bit but i was at an Exchange last night and they had some Eminem on and they were playing the Clean version. i have nothing against

Eminem. but it was a song i didn't know actually and if they can't play one with swear words than why bother even playing it? it wasn't a single that i know of. that's my way of thinking with movies too when you see certain ones on tv.

leaving out films with a little bit of nudity like say Porky's where it's no big deal. than when you see a film like say "Showgirls' or "Boogie Nights' where there's nudity all over the place. my point is depending on how much nudity there is why bother? also why bother showing a film like "Pulp Fiction that is covered with the word fuck it just sounds terrible.

and i don't see the point. i haven't gotten around to see Brad's film yet i prolly will at some point. but i prefer seeing his film uncut. here's something for ya Brad i don't know if you know this but i was watching "The Prowler'

on you tube oh a couple months back. i still haven't gotten around to watch the whole thing. anyways the one i watched on whoever's account i mean had the full movie. not in parts but the full movie. and it showed the nudity. now that took me by surprise to be honest. and i dunno if that's still on there but my point is if it is maybe if you ever put it on you tube i dunno you may or may not have a problem. either way i was shocked that they showed the nudity. i dunno if it helped that it was in fact the entire film and not in parts. and that's how the film should be shown UNCUT! like your film Brad. all of them.

PostSubject: Re: The Cinema Snob Movie: TV Edit   The Cinema Snob Movie: TV Edit EmptyFri Mar 15, 2013 4:11 pm

It's just that when I was younger I was always fascinated by TV edits. I used to like watching favorite R-rated movies of mine on TV just to see what they'd change. Things like re-dubbing the swearing in Robocop were expected, but then they also had an alternate take where the truck misses the melting guy. Sometimes they'd include extra scenes too, either to replace others they'd taken out, or just to make the movie + commercials fill a certain time slot. Before DVDs, that's how you'd see some deleted scenes.

It just felt like they used to put more effort into it. Even though they'd have to remove some things for broadcast standards, they still wanted to give you a good show. Hence the efforts to re-dub lines and use alternate takes rather then just bleeping words blurring nudity. I recently noticed that studios had to re-make a lot of their TV versions because of the shift to HD, and while the new cuts reflect more modern standards (allowing 'shit' on cable airings) they take the easy way out and just bleep and blur.

I just never really saw it as true "censorship" I guess, since the uncut version was always available.

Eh, I was just throwing it out as a random idea, really. Not as a way to censor Brad's movie, but as a way to present it online down the road in a unique way while still incentivising buying the DVD. A kind of remix that invokes a certain nostalgic feeling. Although who knows, It could very well just turn into a joke that gets old fast when you're trying to watch the whole movie.

i do know what you mean like the friday the 13th part 4 cut with Tommy Jarvis's mom's death in it. even though i've never seen that seen in any cut i've seen it's NOT even in the copy of the workprint i have. when it comes to certain scens that have to much nudity and they put in alternate shot for tv cuts i can see that being done. like i "Night Patorl'

how in the film it shows a topless woman and in the same scene it has her clothed in the tv cut. that stuff doesn't bother me. but when it's clear that the studio doesn't do that and they just cut the shit out of it that's when i say why even fucking bother? brad & josh on radio drome joke about i think either one of the Lethel weapon films.

or Pulp fiction fiction how they changed someone saying the word mother fucker. and how their way of changing it is funny as hell. i forget how they said it was put. but they both laugh at it and i think even Josh even talked about a few times on Lost in the Static and Geek Juice as well. yes i listen to pretty much all of Josh's shows cause i get a kick out of him. yes he can be an ass but he does have good points on some stuff too. if you never heard him talk on what the fuck

he does make good points on some things. anyways sorry for going off topic a bit my point is i do get what you are saying like the tv cut for "Superman' the (1978) version or "Fast Times' as well. i know for some films they do that stuff.

but my point has always been what's the point of even showing the film on tv if they can't show the good stuff? even if it's just nudity or in a horror film the killing. if they in horror films just film a version where they show some of the killings and than just do another kill off screen it's still stupid but the scene is still there in a way. i prefer the uncut version myself.

and i love deleted scenes. and alternate takes. yes some films you can understand why it was cut. others were just for time. but either way i love them.and thank god dvd's and blu-ray put those on there when VHS only did that on certain releases.

PostSubject: Re: The Cinema Snob Movie: TV Edit   The Cinema Snob Movie: TV Edit EmptySat Mar 16, 2013 9:28 pm

I kinda think comedies tended to fair the best from editing. Awkward re-dubs are much less distracting in them, and deleted scenes were usually less-successful jokes that still worked pretty well. Good action movies can still be exciting and good horror films can still be scary without the gore, but it does remove some of the bite, I will agree. I guess it jsut depends on the movie as to how the alternate version will fare.

An interesting one was the chronological mini-series version of The Godfather and Godfather II. Both movies edited for TV, but re-cut so that the flashback scenes from 2 come first, followed by the first movie, then the rest of the 2nd, and flushed out with lots of deleted scenes. It's seen as a travesty by many for daring to muck with a masterpiece of American Cinema (even though Coppola was involved), and the Godfather 2 parts do lose something without the parallel stories, but it's still an interesting way to watch the movies. It was aired in the late 70's too, when not everyone had a VCR yet, so it was also the only way for a lot of people to see both movies for the first time.

As for edited music on the radio and such, it doesn't really bother me most of the time. I see it as advertising for the album for the iTunes download. And when a really well known song comes on with certain words blanked out, It's just an invitation to sing along and put those words back in yourself. Although I'll be happy when someone can say "fuck" on the radio, and no one gives a... well, fuck. That being said, I seriously roll my eyes hard when Ce Lo Green's "Forget You" plays anywhere. Talk about forced...

my brother made me a version of 'the godfather' flms on VHS and it has all the deleted scenes put in it. it's my very own cut of the film that i prefer rather than the theatrical cut to be honest.

and it's got all 3 films together. i forget how long it actually is but it's got all the deleted scenes in it including the scenes from the (1977) and (1981) cuts that were made. and i love it to be honest. though i do have the films on blu-ray i haven't watched them yet.

anyways i can think of one film that really doesn't matter which version you watch and that's "Animal House' all it takes out is the nudity and that's pretty much it. so that's not really a big deal ya know? there isn't that much nudity in it anyways.
