PostSubject: Guilty pleasures of music   Guilty pleasures of music EmptyMon Sep 24, 2012 11:50 am

This thread operates the same way the "Theater of Blood" guilty pleasure thread works. You admit to listening to music that you don't want to admit to listening to to many people; be it because of its quality, or simply existing in a genre you dislike.

Of course... I'll start. Ayumi Hamasaki. I'm not fond of J-Pop, even if I'm surrounded by it again. Yet I love Ayu, maybe because she doesn't just squeal like a chipmunk having an orgasm - she actually has *gasp!* A VOICE! Still, her stuff is plenty bubbly and corny, and I rarely even admit this much - but she's one of my top 20 artists >_> <_< -_- Yeah... It's THAT level of guilty pleasure. I think I also like her because she's one of the most gorgeous women on the planet. Seriously.

Ayu is a guilty pleasure mainly because J-Pop normally wants me to jam a pencil in my ears and my dislike of the genre is well spoken enough that the first time I went to my local record store and asked Kota "Do you... erm... have Ayumi Hamasaki's latest album?" he looked at me funny and said "Yeah I do. Also, you're a hypocrite and have betrayed our vow to avoid Pop like the plague! *It's okay I like her too.*"

That was....... AWESOME! Reminded me of some of my favourite 80s tracks - cheesy yes but so goood.

There's one more Japanese band and then I'll state one of my non-Japanese guilty pleasures:

D. It's actually not the music that is a guilty pleasure, D's actually a pretty awesome metal band. Here, check out two of their songs: Akaki hitsuji ni yoru bansankai The 7th Rose. No, the reason they are a guilty pleasure is their leader, Asagi.

Guilty pleasures of music D-d-asagi-30288871-500-363 Asagi's the one in front, in the dress.

WHY DOES ASAGI HAVE TO BE A GUY!?!?!?!?!?!?!? AND WHY DOES HE HAVE TO BE SO FRIGGIN HOT!?!?!!?! Guilty pleasures of music EmoticonCrying

Anyways, let's leave Nihon for a bit. Another guilty pleasure is ABBA. They didn't use to be a guilty pleasure, but because the younger generation right now are arseholes - I can't admit to loving ABBA without being declared King Rumphump von Faggotstein, ruler of Queeria. >_>

How can you be guilty about ABBA? They're one of the most influential bands of the 70s, and they did an incredible job of meshing danceable beats with introspective, edgy lyrics, which is pretty much what the 80s as a whole strived towards.

I do like a couple of ABBAs songs, but you wont find me purchasing an ABBA album.

I am not a person that follows bands, if I like a song, I wont necessarily like the band. iTunes music store was made for people like me.

Some of the Guilty pleasure songs I like are

Whats Up- 3 non blonds

Faithfully- Journey

Tsukematsukeru- Kyary Pamyu Pamyu...if only for the music video.

Fish- Craig Campbell

Moskau- Dschinghis Khan

Little Girls- Oingo Boingo

Invisible Touch- Genesis

Sailor Fuku wo Nuganai de- Urban Garde

oh i love ABBA my favorite song of theirs is i dunno if you've heard of it called 'Rock Me' from their (1975) album which name escapes me at the moment. anyways, with them i tire of the hits to be honest, whenever i listen to say the album
'the arrival' which is the album that contains 'Dancing Queen' cause of the air play it got when 'Muriel's Wedding' came out great movie by the way. it got me so damn sick of that fucking song that i just skip it whenever i listen to that album!

the types of music i love, rock, classic rock, a tiny bit of country hank jr. mainly, david allen coe, r&b a little jazz
rap, horror rap. ICP, oh there's so many different genres's now that i can't even remember all them that i like cause there's just so damn many. but my tastes are all over the place i guess you could say.

other than some of the older bands coming out with new material these days, i haven't been impressed with anything new in i dunno HOW Long? it's been a long time it feels like. how about anyone here, are you not impressed with anything new these days or is this just me?

well i now have all of "ABBA"S discography on my Ipod. check some of their lessor known music.

the day before you came' is a favorite of mine. it was a (1982) song by them. anyways i love a LOT of different kinds of music, but there are some i hate with a passion such as "Death Metal' that's not music that's well i dunno what you'd call it but it's NOT music it's a machine that's it. now i like Heavy Metal that shit is awesome depending on who you listen to.

though i'm really not a big country fan there is a handful i do like Dolly Parton, Hank Jr. David Allen Coe and even his X-rated Country which also had rock in there as well is great as well. like the classic song 'fucking in the butt'

i'm serious that's a david allen coe song. nigger fucker is another great song. i'm not racist nor he Coe but at the time he wrote that song years ago his wife cheated on him with a black man. so that was i think him venting. his drummer at the time was black so if he had anything to say about the title or it's contents he no doubt would have quit being his drummer

he didn't. so there ya go

No reason to feel guilty about Depeche Mode, Angie! Cool

Also, I'm not a rap fan but I love The Beastie Boys and Lupe Fiasco. I don't know that I'd necessarily call them guilty pleasures tho....

Wall of Voodoo was an incredibly innovative and original band, right up there with Talking Heads, Pere Ubu and pre-"Whip It" Devo. There should be no guilt in deriving pleasure from them. I wouldn't necessarily call them synthpop, though.

Hit singles have no relevance to an artist's quality. Frank Zappa, Rush and Jimi Hendrix, for example, all had only one song place in the Top 40. The Ramones had zero. The people who think a musician's quality is measured by chart placement are likely the same people who think Justin Bieber is a musical genius.

Agree i hate that so much. Not to mention Zappa's 1 hit barley resembles him. There is so much music out there outside of the top 40. ALso i think Zappas only hit and Devos only hit are both terrible.

Stop 20 people on the street and ask them to name all of the Wall of Voodoo songs they know

chances are they'll rattle off Mexican Radio and....nothing else.

Zappa, Rush, Hendrix, The Ramones all have many more songs people can rattle off, despite not having top 40 hits.

I don't know where in my post I even *remotely* said an artists success is based on chart placement, so I think maybe you need to re-think your words...

Sorry if I interpreted it like that, but your tone still makes it sound like a lack of recognizable songs or mass recognition is a negative quality, an argument which I truly don't understand.

No, I wouldn't call Wall of Voodoo one of the best bands of all time, but they were a solid, intelligent group who wrote a lot of unique and original music. Just because the average person hasn't heard of the songs on 1981's 'Dark Continent' doesn't make it any less of a great album for those into that particular genre.

Unless, of course, you're just making a joke about their obscurity and I'm reading way too much into it, in which case, I apologize again. I'm just not sure what you're getting at.

I was originally making a joke about how Wall of Voodoo is pretty much known for only Mexican Radio to most people save for their big fans, but you kinda took it to the extreme...

Well, it's hard to interpret tone through text. Sorry. I'm not even that crazy about Wall of Voodoo...now, if you want to have confusing quasi-arguments over Talk Talk or XTC, that's more my speed. Wink
