On the show, Jillian and Josh brought up novel adaptations and taking out some subplots.

I am surprised that he didn't bring up Dune. The 1984 movie left out a good many sub plots, and some being left out leads me to believe that they never intended to adapt the sequels (Messiah, Children, and God-Emperor which was the newest at the time), for example a sub plot in the first novel grows into a major point in Children involving Alia. The missing subplots I guess were dumped to incorporate scenes from the second book, like the opening scene after the credits.
