Well, you all saw the first episode.

I'm not gonna lie, it was cringe worthy, but looks like they were trying a bit harder than last year. Brad was pretty cool, Film Brain was overly annoying - good job by the way, you have set new heights for british stereotypes. Other than that, I really liked the guy in the beginning, who gave the monologue about the 21st century. We'll see how this plays out it's still too early to tell. But seriously, grown man larping? I am not that old and that's simply even more ridiculous than taking over a micronation. Anyway I am hard to please about these things anyway, what did you guys think?

So far, I'm liking Kickassia better. That's because you had to look in Kickassia to really see what was intentional comedy/parody, and what was going to be serious. I'm not saying it was extremely difficult, I'm saying this one is all comedy. The LARPing. The complete lack of connection with reality. The constant 4th Wall breaking... if you can call it that. I'm not a huge fan of most feature length comedies. I'm not saying I'm not going to be able to stand this, but I don't expect to enjoy it as much as I did Kickassia, which I really loved.

Seeing as these Anniversary Videos are made mainly as a fan service and on a pretty low budget, then posted for free for the enjoyment of said fans, I'm not going to be overly critical about it.

Plain and simple is it's awesome to see our favorite reviewers over at TGWTG put their own spin on memorable characters. Brad as Indiana Jones has me laughing my nuts off every scene he's in because of how he plays it. People like Brad, Jew Wario and Spoony help make these things bearable because of how they know how not to take themselves too seriously, while at the same time not being overly hammy. . . Plus the fact that they can actually recite lines written for them without making it sound like they're reading off a cue-card.

I thought Kickassia was boring, to say the least, but saw it as a great anniversary video from a studio like TGWTG. If you're all about dogging this year's anniversary vid because it's about Them having to LARP. .. Well you're taking it too seriously.

edit: you're totally right about Film Brain.. Super obnoxious.. I'm not sure why his character is like that either. He never really gets that way in his reviews.

True, my issue here is mainly that seeing what jokes the Walkers come up with, reflect the mental state of most of the TGWTG fanbase, and that's a childish one. Or pretty close to it. I have no doubt that they had fun and do have fun when shooting the anniversary videos, but this is getting really uncomfortable for fans, who do not think a poor mans re-use of a Loony Toons joke and close to and above 30 year olds dressing up and behaving like spastics is funny. I apologize to the Walkers, I too still concider Tom & Jerry and Merry Melodies to be some of the funniest things out there, just not when you do it, because it's already been done better.

I agree with you on this. It seems that the three people you mentioned (I would add Lupa & Orlando to those 3 too, they're really ok) are the only people really being something resembling a "reviewer roleplaying a character". Which is weird since, you know, they already are playing a character. Who knew that was so deep...

What is pissing me off is that there is no interaction between Spoony and Brad, or more interaction between Brad and Jew Wario (their talk about the "whip" was pretty funny). Doug is neglecting the more than capable people in favor of MarzGurl speaking japanese (though I understand that was not her idea), Joe over-overacting (though not as much as he tends to, but that's due to the fact he doesn't have a lot of lines), Linkara's character line delivery being extremely painful (no idea if that was his choice or the direction he was given; though really good singing voice) and Film Brain... well being weird and annoying.

Yes, I didn't enjoy Kickassia as well, but I am not skipping this years anniversary at all. The concept of the movie doesn't bother me. I actually really like the concept. I actually really liked Gamers and Gamers: The Dorkness Rising (which is not exactly the same, but still has grown men dressing up, one of them even cross-dressing).But the execution of said concept is where it counts and this is where this movie fails for me. Jokes are overused and way too long. Characters are needlessly annoying, or behaving like (excuse the bluntness) morons. That's what bothers me the most. That they act like really stupid kids. You know, the kind of kids that need a few good smacks with that so-called "whip" Brad keeps carrying around. Its as if Doug has lost all of his comedic timing. Can't blame him though, after 3 years doing the same concept over and over, you are bound to run out of ideas. Bottom line, what I don't like about this, is the script. Great premise, horrible jokes. Thank God, there are some people who have good delivery that save it some of the times, but as they are not given enough lines or are given really corny lines even they can't completely save this.

Two more parts remain, and I will wait and see until I pass final judgement on it, but I doubt I will be changing my mind very much.

Anyway, rant over. Just my two cents, that's all Smile

This year's anniversary movie Suburban Knights can be summed up by me as this, two hours and ten minutes of epic excellence!

What I really liked about it is the movie's affectionate and bone tickling tribute to the fantasy genre and its elements. Each of the critics pulled off each character flawlessly especially Brad's brilliant Indiana Jones impersonation which is both spot-on and a nice tribute to the 4 (soon to be 5)-film series. Spoony's Gandalf is an absolute favorite though it's too bad he could've died and then come back as either Spoondalf the White or Saruman, but it's a tiny nitpick. If I was a critic and was in the movie, I would've chosen to dress up as Jim Carrey's The Mask because of all the cartoony weapons. However, makeup and visual effects would've complicated the production so maybe Carrey's Count Olaf for the over-the-top acting both in front and behind the cast.

Of course, fans of Cinemassacre.com (including myself) will be happy by James Rolfe's appearance as the voice of the ancient world in Part 6 as a classic AVGN-type performance. His narrative approach combined with the swearing fits like a glove (pun intended). It seems clear that he's too busy preparing for his AVGN movie to do a physical appearance, so the voice-over part is more acceptable.

Overall, I enjoyed Suburban Knights more than the other anniversary videos. I'm not sure what Doug have any ideas for next year but maybe with help from fans, he might get the ball rolling.

I think it's a mixed-bag, some stuff is funny, some stuff is cringe-worthy, some of the acting is good, some of it is weak. I have to say that this 8-Bit Mickey guy (whom I have never seen outside the TGWTG anniversary stuff) has some pretty damn good comedic delivery. Brad and JewWario were among the highlights of the show so far, some of the stuff with Mati was also quite funny, Spoony had his moments, etc.

BUT, I'm kind of wondering why they're always making these epic adventure parody stuff, wouldn't a "regular" ensemble comedy work better? I have a feeling it would.

I like "The Renegade Version" over on youtube better. It's 40 minutes shorter.

to be honest, the acting at the start wtih some of the cast was shit. pure shit, but it did get better i think. film brain was fucking awful at the start but even he got better as time went on.

the film & yes i call it a film. did have weak spots in it, but it also had some really great stuff in it as well. i haven't seen the other videos yet just this one. the anniversary ones i mean. & i just LOVED Spoony in it.

he was funny as hell. one of the downsides is that Brad wasn't in it much, & that he didn't have many lines. my favorite is the comment on 'Mamma Mia' Because though i love the band "ABBA" i always thought the play was pure shit as well as the film as well. in short a shitty idea.

& i hope the next one is even better. & yes it was low budget but for an i'm sure EXTREMELY Low Budget film which i'm guessing it was. the effects were decent i think. for it's budget i mean. i've seen worse in films that have had bigger budgets to be honest. anyways, i hope Brad has a bigger part in the next one. i do have a question though, weather it's to Brad or anyone on the film he he.

i laugh because of the question that's all. what did the neighbors think of all of you making the film? dressed like the way you all were i mean. plus the great one where you all were playing on the playground i just LOVED that cause it was just soo damn funny. & the fighting wasn't actually to bad to be honest. again i've seen worse. anyways i can tell you all had fun making it which is how it should be.

& that helps any film even if it is a shitty film. your's wasn't shitty by the way i'm just talking about shitty films in general.

@LucasChad You are giving the wrong people waaay too much credit. There is no "affectionate and bone-tickling tribute", but a total butchering of said characters(save for a few), especially with the Enigo Montoya lines.

Ehehehehehe.

No argument there though brilliant is a bit of an overstretch. It was really good though. Jew Wario's David Bowe is up there too

Seriously? It's bad enough they are making jokes about media that is over 10, sometimes 20 years old.

Don't worry, they could be going to look for Army of Darkness plot elements.

I wrote what I thought wrong in the comments section of part 6. Got flamed abit.

So now I'll post what I did like: Spoondalf, the first part, Brad's uncannily convincing Indy accent, Film Brain's psychotic overmedicated stare at the start, Spoony, Orlando, the costumes, Linkara's singing, JewWario's weird ass Bowie.

I must see this renegade version. Forty minutes shorter sounds far more palatable.

@Indiana Groans Yes I read your unsuccessful attempt at stating your opinion and then defending it. We should really give up on trying to do that at the video comments. If the statement "Don't like it, don't watch it" can apply to the video, the same can apply to my comment - don't like, don't read it and don't respond. As this is so called "free" entertainment, I am also free to state my opinion, be it negative or positive. That's why I respect this place and respect Brad for allowing us the freedom to express our views. He doesn't censor us and as long as everyone is civil and not simply being a dick for the sake of being a dick it's alright.

On a sidenote, Brad's "Taking off Mama Mia from stage" speech was by far the best joke in the movie, and I was so taken aback by the style change in the humor that I'm thinking it might have been him ad-libing it, or he wrote that joke. If that is not the case, then it is clearly evident that Doug and Rob can do far better than "dick n fart" jokes.

I felt (and still feel) there was too much lame comedy and not enough epic. This wasn't like watching an epic fantasy (which I felt Kickassia was, even though the makers feel there was more story to this one, which I also disagree with), it was like watching Scary Movie. It was a string of skits that would have gone at the end of reviews without enough excitement to hold it together. It wasn't completely lacking in excitement, but it mostly was, and as somebody who's not a fan of too much meta humor anyway... yeah, I would have preferred if they had at least had a more valid excuse for their costumes than "we need to LARP".
