PostSubject: I saw "Paranoia"   I saw "Paranoia" EmptySun Jun 12, 2011 1:56 pm

It's really good. Really really good. I think Brad is definitely trying to branch out and be more versatile, and this movie is a step in a good direction because he's pretty damn intense in it. I was a little iffy on the trailer, but watching the movie, I can see why they used the clips that they did, because anything else would give away a lot of important plot points about the movie that you wouldn't want to give away in the trailer.

Has anyone else seen the movie? I'm curious to hear people's thoughts on it.

I saw "Paranoia" Empty
PostSubject: First Watch   I saw "Paranoia" EmptyMon Jun 13, 2011 2:24 am

Just got Paranoia in the mail yesterday. I was able to give it one fair watch today and I'm basing my opinion on this initial watch. This flick is definitely the next step for Stoned Gremlin Productions and Walkaway Entertainment. I have thus far watched Freak Out, Cheap, Game Boys, and Hooker with a Heart of Gold. You can easily see Brad's progression in each one. Paranoia first put me on an edge simply because Brad didn't direct this entry. Instead, he chose to write and act in this iteration while handing over the reins to Ryan Mitchelle. Ryan's name is sure to pop up even more often now. I'm not sure if this is his directorial debut (solo), but if it is we have a great new director on hands.

Initial response ... awesome flick. I enjoyed every minute of it. The story, while easily predictable, was interesting and very entertaining. I'm not giving away any story details simply because I would rather have people buy the movie and watch it. While I was expecting Brad's trademark use of period music, I completely understand why he couldn't. Licensing fees are far too expensive for the time being. However, Michael "Skitch" Schicano orchestrates a score for this movie that actually was reminiscent of the Silent Hill series. It was haunting and yet not terrifying. It matched the scenes perfectly and only enhanced the viewing experience. This maybe considered an indie flick but it is far removed from amateur. Every actor nailed their parts perfectly and Ryan set up some amazing shots for this traveling tale.

I only had one pet peeve that occurred throughout the film. At the beginning of the flick, and echoed later on, a ceramic cup falls and breaks on the floor. The sound effect used was that of a glass cup shattering. It's a minor detail but one that just seemed out of place when everything else was put together so well. There are probably other flaws and glitches but again, this was my first viewing and the only thing that bothered me. Granted it wasn't enough to keep me from enjoying a really good film.

I can only hope that Brad and Ryan submit this to the many indie film festivals. To which is must end saying, keep up the good work and keep making more films.

PostSubject: Quick Addendum   I saw "Paranoia" EmptyThu Jun 16, 2011 6:11 am

Since my last post, I have watched all of the bonus material and I re-watched the movie itself quite a few times. That being said, yes I'm a quite a fan of this flick. The one pet peeve that I had was addressed in the commentaries. Why change up the sound? Because those damn $1 mugs just didn't want to break. I do still need to look up those production shots.

I do have a warning for anyone trolling around the forums. The DVD works best on a standard DVD player. I tried playing it on my Samsung Blu-Ray player and had some issues (i.e. the DVD stopped playing around chapter 4). No my copy isn't scratched. The only issues is that it looks like part of the DVD label didn't cut right and is only barely torn around part of the edge. It's a non-issue but if anyone else has problems just try a different player first.

Would love to see this in the theater but driving to Illinois from Georgia is a bit much. Again, great work guys and I look forward to seeing more your work.

Just watched it and I have to say that' some damn fine indy filmmaking. Maybe it felt a little long in a few sequences towards the end and some of the shots in the ending were a little cheesy in my opion, it's a really enjoyable little flick with some good acting (for what it is). Gonna work my way through the commentaries now.

I just received my copy in the mail today. While the ending WAS a bit predictable, I found the film to be enjoyable overall. I'm glad I ordered it.

BTW Dante, I will say that I played this in my PS3 (I use that pretty much for all my DVDs and Blu-Rays) and I didn't have any issues. I do know that some DVD-Rs can vary from player to player (if all the complaints I've seen about the Warner Archive releases can be believed), so it certainly could be a YMMV situation, though.

I just got my copy and really, really enjoyed it. And while I agree that parts of the story were predictable, there were more than enough curveballs in the story to catch me off guard. And overall, I really dug the story.
Perhaps my favorite part of the overall experience of the film would have to have been the score, however. It reminded me of classic John Carpenter scores and I felt it fit the film perfectly.
All in all, I loved this film and have been showing it to all my friends. Thank you!

Excellent movie, really. The trailer made me think that it's going to be nice but still kind of "home brewed". It is not. It feels like a real movie and is in most parts pretty great and in some smaller parts still okay. Yes the music is fantastic. Somehow it reminded me of Carpenter too. I guess a bit of "Assault" was in there. Brad is a good writer and actor and Ryan caught the mood perfectly. I love the scene when he takes a smoking break lying in the grass together with a corpse. Very Happy Good stuff! Everybody involved is convincing. Brad writes good dialogues and knows how to bring in a certain style that is so 80ies/90ies. It's a good flick for Halloween. Ryan's "Paranoia" and Carpenter's "Halloween" would make a good double feature in my book. I hope there is more stuff coming up from Brad and Ryan. Radiodrome said so I remember. Cool! bounce

Paranoia was really good. The attention to detail in the movie really let me know that the guys cared about the quality of their product. You notice little things in a movie like that. Whethe ror not a "busted tail light" is really busted or not, of if the guy says its fixed now and in fact it is. Stuff like that matters. The acting was surprisingly good (what? What. What! Im kidding im kidding) Cheap is still my favorite film of Brads (ide kill to have that in HD) and I would describe that film as GREAT, and while I cant say Paranoia was a GREAT film, it was a thoroughly enjoyable film and it was worth paying the price for it I put it proudly in my DVD collection.

I was very entertained by this flick from start to finish. I've been watching Brad's videos for over three years now, and I can say I'm a huge Brad Jones fan in general. Ive still only seen the writer's cut, cause I have yet to order the DVD. But I plan to soon as I'm pretty anxious to hear the commentary and watch the extras. From the trailer, it looked very enigmatic as to what kind of movie it was. I wasn't quite sure where the story was going when I first started watching, but as it went, I was sucked in. Brad's performance is worthy of some sort of Independent Spirit Award, and frankly everyone in the movie did a top-notch acting job. Brian Irving was surprisingly menacing at times, after seeing him in the videos for awhile now, I honesty didnt expect that turn with his character. But overall, I think I feel confident in saying that Paranoia is probably the best movie I've seen come out in the last three years or so. I'm not big on modern movies, period, so I usually leen to the more underground, independent stuff. And this satisfied me on every level. It had a very David Lynchian feel to it, while the score gave a subtle John Carpenter tone to it. Plus, I have no idea if it was intended or not, but the scene at the service station when Mark uses the restroom, really reminded me of the scene in Psycho with Janet Leigh in the restroom at the car dealership. Absolutely love this movie and am waiting anxiously for The Cinema Snob Movie.

I saw "Paranoia" Empty
PostSubject: Re: I saw "Paranoia"   I saw "Paranoia" EmptySun Oct 07, 2012 12:16 pm

Hi all, I want to ask a question: is Paranoia any good? Now, before you guys respond, please let me explain where I'm coming from with this.

In terms of Brad's movies, I've only fully seen three (Game Boys, Hooker with a Heart of Gold, and recently The Cinema Snob Movie), and have only seen very little of two (Midnight Heat, and Paranoia: The Writer's Cut (which I will explain also)). I don't know how this is going to sound, but I'll give it a try. In my review of The Cinema Snob Movie, I made a point how they really grew as filmmakers, this is true, but I didn't mention them as actors, which is also true. Going by how I was looking at it from my POV from watching his movies; when I saw Game Boys, I couldn't shake the idea that I'm watching people I know from this site pretending to be in a movie of their own; with Hooker, I felt the same way but only in the very beginning, it was lost in the rest of the movie where I saw them in their roles moreso than who they actually were; finally, with the Snob Movie, I saw their characters, and referred to their characters' by name, not the actors.

Now I don't know what I'm trying to make here, but finally getting to the point of all of this, basically it has to do with the first 10-15 minutes of the Writer's Cut and my reaction to it. The first 10 minutes sets up Brad's character; he's divorced now, sleepless, he sees the news about a killer, kills someone who maybe the killer, tries to ask for help, gets nothing, so he takes off where on the way he is stopped by a cop. That's 10-15 mins of what I saw of the Writer's Cut, and after all that I backed out from watching more because of this feeling I had with it; it felt rushed. This is a problem Hooker, nor the Snob Movie, had. It felt like a mad rush to get everything set that there was no breathing room nor did anything feel like I truly believed what I was seeing (Brad's character asking Sarah's character why she's leaving him just as she leaves; the dialogue felt so unnatural). Now, again before anyone says anything; I do know the ending: it was spoiled for me, and by my doing; so I know.

Anyway, that's my concern for Paranoia, and again it's only coming from the first 10-15 mins from the Writer's Cut. So, is the Writer's Cut very different from the real cut? Compared to the Snob Movie; how is the acting/story execution for this movie overall? Basically, if the Writer's Cut made me backed out 10-15 mins in and for those reasons I just said, will the real cut be much better, or will it be the same?

Paranoia was surprisingly good, at least in the script department. It's definitely a low budget film technically but the script made it feel like a more proper movie.

Old post I know, but I seriously enjoyed this one.

Considering the budget, the acting was really good, the cinematography is neat (miss black and white films!) and I enjoyed the (writer's cut) soundtrack.

Didn't see the ending coming either so that was also nice. Really good stand alone flick, if only more Hollywood productions had this level or care and love, we'd have a shit ton of great flicks in the mainstream.
