Thrift Store Treasures

I would like to share with you all the treasures that I usually find at my local thrift store.
One of them is a 1981 playset of Castle Grayskull from "He-Man and the Maters of the Universe" for only $5.

I just did a thrift store/swap meet run a few days ago. I typically look for the same things wherever I go: VHS tapes, old video games and terrible Halloween decorations, and I always find them in spades.

I most recently scored a handful of VHS (including 'Rock and Roll High School Forever', 'Streets of Fire' and a Vanilla Ice video EP), a Charles Dickens action figure, a bunch of huge $1-apiece glittery skulls and a copy of 'Atmosfear: The Harbingers', a classic VHS board game (which is the sequel to 'Nightmare', the one Spoony reviewed).

That's my life, and I'm proud of it.

Cool. That Castle greyskull seems in great shape: it has its stickers and all. The one in my parents attic is in much worse shape.


But I love going to such thrift stores and flea markts, to look for such nostalgic stuff as well.

A year ago or so I got this old cell phone on a flea market:




And I also bought these Snob-related movies on various flea markets and thrift stores (minus the doletmite DVD, which I bought online):

Obviously because I collect old stuff like that. Either you get this or you dont.

I don't find too many obscure VHS movies at the thrift shops I go to, usually they just have 100 copies of JURASSIC PARK. I'm doing good if I find an old MST3K episode.
I've had awesome luck at my local Goodwill with clothes though. I love being able to pick up brands that I have neither the money nor the inclination to buy new; I've got jeans from Banana Republic and Calvin Klein that I only paid $4 for. It's fantastic.

I wanted a Castle Grayskull so bad as a little kid.    That and a SuperNintendo; I'm still scouring the shops for one of those. (I know, I could go on eBay, but it's just not as sporting!)

You laugh, but I was raised in a church that actually did associate He-Man with occultism (which was, to them, 100% interchangable with Satanism). I was warned against the evils of He-Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Gargoyles, Dungeons & Dragons, Ghostbusters, Beavis & Butthead (that one, I can sort of see the logic; on the surface it looks like the show is celebrating stupidity/vandalism/sexism, but of course when you actually take it into context you can see Judge is not encouraging this kind of behavior; and anyway everyone only watched it for the video  riffing). I may have even watched "Deception of a Generation" in Sunday School, I don't remember for sure but that doughy guy did look kind of familiar.
What was considered wholesome entertainment? Chick Tracts.

I guess it goes without saying that it didn't take, since I post here. I guess the Devil (or even worse, the Baptists) caught me.   

Last week, I found an anteater Beanie Baby for two bucks.

VHS box set of the Richard Chamberlain TV miniseries "Shogun".


Vintage 1977 "Star Wars" Luke Skywalker action figure (the lightsaber is missing).

Last week I got a Mr. Coffee k-cup brewer for $5 (they usually retail for upwards of $80). It works like a dream.    I gotta make or buy a reusable pod though b/c those coffee pods are stupidly expensive.

I found some LaserDiscs at a Goodwill today.

Those look to be in good condition. The Goodwill closest to me threw all the Laserdiscs in with the vinyl records, and a lot of them came out of their slips and are all scratched up beyond recognition. It almost brings a tear to my eye.

Found some pretty random stuff few weeks ago:



A navy cap (most likely a prop), an old gas mask from the Finnish army, few small beer glasses, and a dvd of Team America, which I commented on in the Last movie you watched -thread.

For $4 I bought all 3 seasons of "Beauty and the Beast" with Ron Perlman, "The Nanny Christmas Special" & "Shock Treatment".

I got this coin from WW2 Germany at a flea market a couple of weeks ago (I think):


Im sure I have posted this somewhere before. But I found a laserdisc version of Robocop 3 at a thrift-store. So now I have the worst robocop movie on 3 different formats (because why not?). Now I just need it on blue-ray:
