Anyway, it's just something about the way Donald Fagen and Costello both sing, the way they play with genre, and their sardonic sense of humor.

Not really, no. Most of Costello's music until very recently was more of a punk morphing into a pop rock kinda thing.

Steely Dan was more jazzy with a twinge of rock every so often.
