Wow, that's....unexpected.
I mean, let's not fool ourselves into thinking that the original 'Jem' was any kind of masterpiece, but this trailer makes it seem like they just slapped the name and image onto an otherwise unrelated by-the-numbers rags-to-riches teen drama flick. I had to double-check to make sure that the original series actually had the sci-fi/action elements that I thought I remembered it having.
On its own merits, it doesn't look *bad*, just generic...no better or worse than any other of the dozens of teen flicks released each year. I think people's misplaced nostalgia is making this into a bigger deal than it really is.

She raises some good points, especially about the questionably male-driven creative team behind it.
I'm all for creative reinvention, but I really don't understand the mentality behind this particular rebranding. The 'Transformers' and 'G.I. Joe' movies, regardless of their quality, at least kept the core essentials of the original series intact. 'Jem' didn't have any franchise outside of the original 1985-1988 cartoon series; heck, it didn't even have a soundtrack album. Adapting the series to film in such a way doesn't seem to have an advantage with any demographic: older fans of the series have nothing to connect with because the plot has been so radically changed, and younger fans interested in the teen drama angle won't have ever seen 'Jem' before and the significance of the character is lost on them.
I mean, it's obvious what's being done here: they're repurposing a marketable franchise to a modern demographic using a contemporary formula. Doesn't mean it still makes any sense.

The trailer makes it look like a remake of "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains", minus anything that made that movie any good.
Who here has a hunch that the original script had nothing to do with Jem and the Holograms and they just changed the names once the producers got the movie rights?

iv'e seen the original cartoon as a kid. it was a meh cartoon back than. it wasn't the worst thing that came out of the 80's though to be fair. and this film looks meh to me. good cast and by good cast i say Juliette Lews and Molly Ringwald. lousy music like before, i think the decade is totally wrong for this to be honest. we all know what year it is now, i think if they were going to make this it should have been in the 80's. by the make-up at least it'sstaying true to the cartoon and it looked bad back than too.

Awww... Come on wildhoney, who didn't take a pink crayola marker and draw a star over their eye in the 80s...
So I guess the thing that can be said about this news is that... is it truly outrageous? truly truly truly outrageous?

I wouldn't watch the movie anyway because I didn't grew up watching "Jem". For whatever reason I missed the show and learned from it later in my life so I can't tell who is who and what adventures the heroines go through. But let me tell this: When I google for "Jem" pictures I see what characterizes the show a lot: Colours. There are hardly any in the trailer. The trailer itself seems to be about any other random girl group including girls doing a lot of talking, staring at screens and social media. Sorry but I can't imagine that "Jem" fans jump in the air out of happiness when seeing this trailer. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Jem is a show that i honestly don't remember anyone at school being hyped about when it was originally on. now other cartoons yeah no doubt about that. hell with TMNT was on i wasn't the only die hard fan. but as for the cartoon Jem. that prolly hasn't aged well at all. and you are right that i do remember it having lots of colors.
