Here's a list of bands that I can think of that decided to call it quits due to the death of their fellow members.

Nirvana
Pantera
RUN DMC

Didn't Dimebag Darrel pass on *after* Pantera broke up? In fact, wasn't his death over a year after Pantera split?

You're right on that one.
After doing a little research on Wikipedia, Dimebag & his brother Vinnie created Damageplan after Pantera's breakup.

The band only lasted for a year.
They continued on with Hellyeah.

Rest in peace, Dimebag. You still rock.

The Beastie Boys
The Grateful Dead
I was going to say the Sex Pistols, but they'd officially already broken up when Sid died.
Joy Division....sort of. They reformed as New Order.

Wow. This is hard.

The Minutemen broke up after guitarist D.Boon was killed in an accident. That's the only one that springs to mind that hasn't already been mentioned.

The Grateful Dead, i thought, still carry on to this day, but are simply known as "The Dead".

Joy Division and The Gits come to mind.

The Exploding Hearts split up after...uh, almost everyone died.

I don't believe Pink Floyd ever officially closed the book on their existence, but after Richard Wright died, David Gilmour emphatically stated "Pink Floyd" was no more.

Also, even though they haven't officially announced their disbandment yet, I must naturally assume the death of Oderus Urungus last month spells the definite end of GWAR.

I've met Dave Brockie (aka Oderus Urungus) at a Fangoria horror convention in NYC back in 2009.

Nice. Even though I'd known about GWAR since I was, like, ten and have some friends who've been fans for nearly twenty years, I never got the chance to see them live. It wasn't until recently - when, through my pursuits in SFX work, I started working with a former member - that I went through all the albums and all the movies and really began to go nuts over them. I was quite broken up over Dave's death, and I'd never even seen him in person...some friends of mine took it really, really hard, too. :/

Circle of life, I guess. *sigh*

I think people mostly just like how theatrical they are (or were). They took what artists KISS and Alice Cooper had been doing and ramped it way-the-hell up. By all accounts they're really receptive to their fans too.

They were more than just theatrical; whereas KISS and Cooper just had make-up and special effects, GWAR had a fully fleshed-out mythology which spanned multiple mediums: concept albums, long-form movies, comic books and even a board game. Plus, their shows weren't just songs: almost all of their tours from 1989-2000 were semi-legit stage plays/performance art with a loose three-act narrative. For as crude and low-brow as they are, it truly was a brilliant and ambitious concept which had never been done before. It's weird that people somehow take that for granted.

Plus, I think the music is really solid: sometimes they falter, but when they hit, they really hit. While I like their eclectic '90s albums the best, the stuff they were doing from 2000 on (when they started focusing less on theatricality and more on the music) is really damn good if you're a metal fan.

I said this mostly out of grief, even though I knew that since the beginning, GWAR intended their band to last for "a thousand years" regardless of who was in it, with Dave Brockie himself saying many times that he wanted the band to outlive even him. GWAR recently announced that they're pressing on with a new tour in the fall and are working on new studio material with a new vocalist. It doesn't surprise me, and I whole-heartedly support it.

Probably any one-man band.

Fair enough, i can't remember the 1st time i've heard of them maybe it was on an episode of beavis and butthead? and i thought to myself what the fuck is that? i still have that thought actually. but like i said to each their own. i do agree it is a concept that hadn't been done before or since though there have no been bands that have tried no doubt. and though i'm not fan of their music good for them. "Genesis a favorite band of mine lasted without Peter Gaberial and though he's still alive. there is no doubt they thought they wouldn't in fact they nearly broke up cause no singer could be found. until they talked Phil Collins into being the lead singer.

yes the music is vastly different i dunno why i thought of them to be honest but my point is sometimes bands can workout when the lead singer either quits or dies on you.

Sublime.

The survivors formed Long Beach Dub All-Stars.

Does that count? After all, the survivors did form a cash grab-...er, I mean, they reformed Sublime in 2009, although I guess it's technically "Sublime with Rome" since the original singer's estate sued them over the name. And then one of the two original members left, making the whole endeavor even more pointless and shallow.

Technically Blind Melon did after Shannon Hoon died but recently they reformed with a new singer.

Ha!  I didn't know that happened.  I saw 'Sublime with Rome' on a ticket for a show once and I didn't pay it much heed thinking they were a Sublime coverband or something.
