PostSubject: The August Underground Movies   The August Underground Movies EmptyWed Jan 19, 2011 10:48 am

First of all, I feel like I shouldn't even call these three things "films"

They don't really have what you, or I would call a plot.

They are essentially somebody with a handcam attempting to make what looks like a simulated snuff film. Of the three, I've so far watched two of them. I'm told in the third movie they legitimately kill an animal. I'm pretty sure the director also almost got arrested/or did get arrested for trying to bring copies of the movie into another country at one point. Oh, and they also randomly have footage of tire swings and trains for no apparent reason.

These are horrible "films," and they should never be viewed by anybody.

...so obviously I'd like to request them!

Truthfully I'm not even sure when they were made. They, however, look like they were made sometime when the VHS tape was originally invented.

They were all made in the 2000s. The first AU was 2001, I believe.

Yepp.
August Underground is from 2001, the second one from 2003 and the third one from 2007.

I think the review would suffer from the same problem that makes porn hard to review: without a real plot, or any actual characters, it's really hard to write a review.

There is a running plot through the films... sure, it's hard to notice or take note of because it's so disjointed... but there is one there. You can call it BS, but on the commentary tracks of the movies Fred does explain the plot and where things are coming from with the story. He says a lot of fans make up things about August Underground's story and put things in that aren't there... but there really is a story they were trying to convey in a very disjointed way.

Personally, I love the movies. I've got the snuff edition dvds (with my Penance being an unnumbered version with way more autographs than usual) and even a huge autographed poster above my bed. Razz

I've made comments about the movies on a few of Brad's videos. I'm not sure if he's ever seen them because he mentions how disturbing and vile some movies are that pale in comparison, to me, to August Underground in those regards. Maybe he doesn't want to. In any case, a review of those movies from him would be no good.

Never seen the August Underground movies myself. I'm sure I'll see them all at some point, whether I like them or not.

I can save you some time.

No, you won't.

They essentially play out like this:

1. Killers shown torturing some body.
2. Random shot of grass.
3. Random footage of a dog walking
4. They're driving at night.
5. Suddenly they're driving at the day with no real transition.
6. More torture.
7. Footage of a cow giving birth.
8. Concert footage
9. The end. No credits. It just ends.

I mostly say I'll end up watching them at some point because I've got a best friend who's big on that faux-snuff, so at some point he'll probably ask if I want to see them, and as i have a policy of giving everything a fair chance, I'll probably say yes.

Just like I've yet to see either Human Centipede or A Serbian Film. Not really snuff, I know, but I'll probably end up seing them the same way.

Number 8 was concert footage.

Fair enough. I suppose they're worth seeing for the ridiculousness of it at times. I mean in the second one you see a guy cut some chubby girl's stomach open and then do what any self respecting serial killer would in that situation: have sex with it.

I actually did read about that scene in a column in Rue Morgue. The author brought it up because he had recently met the guy who played Maggot, and found him top be a very nice man.

I've shown a few friends of mine the scene from Mordum where they make the guy cut his dick off and then rape his girlfriend with it.

For pure shits and giggles.

It's funny for me to see people's reactions to stuff like that when they're unfamiliar with exploitation and 'snuff' movies. The first time I actually saw it, it seemed kind of rough and hard to watch. But you get used to it. It's probably the most realistic that their gore has been in any movies. Most of Mordum is incredibly fake looking. Which is really sad. The first one actually had a realistic quality. But that was due to film degradation. They made the movie, then kept making copies of it on VHS until it just looked horrible. That was what gave it the whole realistic effect. The first is also the best to me. So I'd recommend starting with it if you really are wanting to get into them. I'm not particularly fond of the second one. It's incredibly noisy and chaotic. It's an assault on your senses. It has it's place in the arc, but it's not one I watch often.

Yeah, that is always fun. Sometimes you can get people to cringe without even showing them the damn movie; just describing violent scenes is enough. Particularly if those scene involve damage to fingers/nails/teeth/eyes.

Let me tell you, you'll get a few people with the ending of Antichrist. Razz Hated the movie, but the last bit is really cringe worthy. My girlfriend always tells me she refuses to watch some of my movies just because of what I tell her.

Some people refuse to listen to me talk about movies anymore because of the same kind of thing...which is a bummer because that's pretty much what I like talking about the most.

I will never understand how someone could be a fan of snuff/torture porn films. Not judging, just saying. The worst thing I ever saw was Street Trash.

PostSubject: Re: The August Underground Movies   The August Underground Movies EmptyFri Jan 21, 2011 6:34 am

I really don't understand the reputation that movie has. I saw that before I saw movies like August Underground and the Guinea Pig series, I think. Still, when I saw it... I thought it was incredibly boring and lame. Not even bad in a good way. Just crap I never wanted to see again.

As for being a fan of that kind of stuff... I like gore. I think it's entertaining. I'm not a fan of Hostel or Antichrist or any of those other big production movies... but low budget stuff that's made to look like the real thing I can dig. I've never watched Men Behind The Sun and it would honestly bother me to see some of the stuff. I started it once, but didn't make it more than 15 minutes in. I know that's exploitation, but still, it had real stuff in it. Also, the fact that August Underground is so disjointed and short helps it keep my attention. It's hard for me to watch movies for repeat viewings. If I know what's going to happen, the build up no longer does anything for me and I just get bored. With August Underground you get shots of gore interspersed with scenes of these people hanging out (I'm also a fan of bands' backstage footage on dvds so Razz). So yeah... it's an experience that's easy for me to watch over and over again. I don't think they're masterpieces or anything. But I do find them entertaining and they hold my attention.

I agree, I like exploitation films (they're hilarious) but I could never get in the shock movie genre. Even mainstream movies like Saw I refuse to watch.

I definitely think that the first Saw movie has been tarnished by the reputation of it's sequels. It was violent for sure, but I never felt like it was being violent just for violence's sake, and it really did work well as a suspense/thriller, with a good twist-ending.
