It has been announced that legendary anime director Hayao Miyazaki has retired after 50 years.

He will be holding a press conference on September 6, 2013 explaining why.
Whatever reason, I wish him the best of luck & thank him so very much for many wonderful years of entertainment & happiness.

One of the best! Happy retirement to you sir!

EDIT:
Well, damn. I could've gone down to Telluride this weekend and seen a preview of THE WIND RISES. Their film festival was over Labor Day & I totally missed it. They also screened 12 YEARS A SLAVE which I'm also dying to see. Story of my life. :/

I respect the guy and everything he achieved, but even though I love anime...movies done by Ghibli were never my cup of tea. Only ones I kinda like are Princess Mononoke and Grave of the fireflies (not directed by Miyazaki).

Is it that they're more geared towards kids, or is there something specific about Miyazaki's style that turns you off?

That's actually a pretty tough question. Never thought much about it. I just never enjoyed them. Maybe it's simply because they are too "big". Anime was always something cheap and dirty for me. Something with a simple style of art.
